Extraction-Polarography of Cobalt(Ⅱ)-Diethyldithiocarbamate Using Acetonitrile as a Solvent

Cobalt(Ⅱ)-diethyldithiocarbamate in a salted-outacetonitrile gives two waves of the d.c. polarogram witha dropping mercury electrode. The first wave with E1/2=-0.45 V vs. SCE is due to the adsorption of the complexonto the mercury electrode. The second wave with E1/2=-0.98Vis of diffusion-controlled nature and its wave-height isdirectly proportional to the concentration of cobalt(Ⅱ) inthe range of 0.5-10 ~g/ml(the organic phase). Converselythe first wave becomes gradually high with increasedconcentration of cobalt(Ⅱ), but there is no linearrelationship between them. The square-wave polarographicdetermination of cobalt(Ⅱ) in aqueous solutions is possibleat the concentration range 0.05-2.0 μg/ml, after it wassalted-out with sodium citrate into the acetonitrile phase.Nickel(Ⅱ), copper(Ⅱ) and bismuth(Ⅲ) at the same amount ofcobalt(Ⅱ) do not interfere with the determination. Iron(Ⅲ)is masked by addition of sodium fluoride.
