Fundamental Optical Transitions in the Single Crystal of Cadmium Iodide

The fundamental reflectivity spectrum of the cleavedsurface was measured at room and liquid heliun temperaturesin the region 3-12 eV for CdI2 single crystal.Thepolarized reflectivity spectra of the polished surfaceperpendicular to the easy-cleavage face were also measuredat liquid nitrogen temperature in the region 3-7 eV.In the ε2 spectrum of the cleaved surface analyzedthrough the Kramers-Kronig procedure, three very sharpexciton lines with half-widths 20-30 meV are embedded inthe deep interband scattering continuum. The low energyparts of the spectral behaviors are interpreted in termsof dichroic optical transitions occuring at high symmetrycritical points in the Brillouin zone. The upper valencebands are of predominant iodine ρ-like character with apossibility of a certain admixture of cadmium d-like wavefunctions.
