The ESR spectra of a Cu 2+ center in CdCl2 have been studied atabout 35 K, at liquid nitrogen temperature and at room temperature.The Cu 2+ center in CdC12 is found to be composed of acentral Cu 2+ ion and six nearest neighbor Cl- ions. The angulardependence of the spectra obtained at LNT will be explainedin terms of the Jahn-Teller distortions, where the octahedronof Cl- ions around a Cu 2+ ion is elongated tetragonally. In addition,an axial distortion along the crystal c-axis was alsoobserved at LNT. At 35 K, ten or thirteen sharp structures wereobserved at the high field part of the spectrum when the magneticfield was applied along or perpendicularly to tha axis joiningCu 2+ ion to one of the Cl- ions, respectively. These areassociated with superhyperfine structures due to the magneticinteraction of the unpaired electron spin with two or four Clnuclei.At room temperature is observed a single broad ESRline with axial symmetry, which is interpreted in terms of thedynamical Jahn-Teller effect.
