Our knowledge is very insufficient on the staphylinid fauna of the Bonin Islands, lying about 1,000-1,200 km south of Tokyo. Fortunately, the author had two opportunities to make collectings on the islands in the summer of 1972 and the autumn of 1976,and was able to obtain by himself many staphylinid specimens. Besides, the author examined some additional material through the courtesy of Messrs. T. HANATANI, Y. HORI, Y. KUSUI, Y. TANOKUCHI and N. WATANABE. In this paper, 30 species of staphylinid beetles from the Bonins are listed based upon the materials mentioned above; of these, 24 species are newly recorded from the islands and 7 are new to the staphylinid fauna of Japan. It can be said that the staphylinid fauna of the Bonin Islands is characterized by the following points : 1) Mountain species and large ground-living species do not exist in the islands, which are oceanic and considerably distant from any continents. 2) In the Bonin Islands, species belonging to the subfamily Oxytelinae are predominant as compared with the staphylinid faunas of the Islands of Miyaki-jima and Yakushima, the former belonging to the Izu Islands and the latter to the Ryukyus. This phenomenon may have been resulted from the fact that the oxytelines are mostly minute and are readily carried by wind. 3) No endemic species has hitherto been found from the islands. Even though certain endemic forms arc found in future, they will form a very small percentage of the whole staphylinid fauna of the Bonins. 4) A majority of the staphylinid species found in the Bonins are either circumtropical or cosmopolitan.
