The stress relaxation test is the dual of the creep test. However, because of the high rigidity (high elastic modulus) of ceramic materials, an extremely small strain applied to the specimen is enough for the test. Accordingly, stress relaxation tests can be conducted in the complete absence of the formation and growth of grain-boundary cavities, leading to rheological analyses in a precise manner. Made are both theoretical considerations and experimental analyses for the high-temperature stress relaxation behavior associated with grain-boundary sliding and interlocking of polycrystalline ceramics.
