Si_3N_4 matrix composites reinforced with SiC particles were fabricated by hot-pressing using Y_2O_3 or Y_2O_3/Al_2O_3 additives. Their microstructure and bending strength were evaluated from R. T. to 1400℃. High temperature bending strength of the composite with Y_2O_3 and Al_2O_3 was decreased monotonously with increasing SiC content due to grain morphology and the softening of the grain boundary phase. In contrast to this, high temperature bending strength of the composite with Y_2O_3 was substantially improved caused by the crystallization of the grain boundary and the grain refinement due to the addition of SiC.
