An energy-based consideration is given for examining the R-curve and the size effects on the resistance to thermal shock fracture and subsequent damage of brittle materials. A dimensionless expression for the total energy (Gibbs free energy) of an equilibrium crack leads to a unified theory of the resistance parameter R_1 and R_2 for thermal shock fracture and damage, respectively. Details of the R-curve effect and size effect laws are discussed through analytical simulation for a steady-state thermal shock stress distribution of elastic bodies with various rising R-curve behaviors.
