Microstructure of Si_3N_4-SiC composites was observed to clucidate the crystalline state and lattice orientation of dispersed SiC particles within Si_3N_4 grains. There were observed two types of SiC inclusions. i. e. nanoscopic SiC clusters finer than 60nm and coarser stable SiC particles. Lattice images of nanoscopic SiC clusters were nearly equal to those of β-Si_3N_4 and were coherently matched with Si_3N_4 matrix. Contrary to this, stable SiC particles showed the lattice images inherent to β-SiC. Formation mechanism of nanoscopic SiC clusters was discussed.
