La_2O_3/Al_2O_3 ceramics were prepared by slip-casting method. These ceramics exhibited translucent characteristics after sintering and a subsequent HIP treatment. La_2O_3 particles were found in the triple points along Al_2O_3 grain boundaries. Translucent, mechanical and thermal characteristics of these ceramics dependent on the growth of Al_2O_3 grains. Grain growth of Al_2O_3 is controlled by the amount of La_2O_3 particles added and the conditions of HIP treatment. For example, the alumina ceramic containing 0.06wt% La_2O_3 HIP treated at 1680℃ exhibited some excellent characteristics : In-line transmittance >30% (at 600nm; thickness=1.0mm), bending stress >270MPa and thermal shock resistance (ΔT) >200℃.
