The Judd-Ofelt Ω_t parameters were determined for Nd^<3+> and Er^<3+> ions in Several glasses. The Nd^<3+> 1.3μm and Er^<3+> 1.5μm emissions, which can be used for optical amplification in fiber telecommunication, are dominated by the value of Ω_6. From the ^<151> Eu Mossbauer measurements for the equivalent composition, a strong negative correlation was found between the isomer shift of Eu^<3+> and the Ω_6 parameter of Nd^<3+> and Er^<3+> ions. This can be ascribed to the facts that among three Ω_t 'S, the Ω_6 is most affected by the radial integral of 4f and 5d electrons and that with increasing covalency, the 6s electron shields 5d electrons and thus decreases <4f|r^s|5d>.
