Alumina ceramics which are used for bone substitutes are not bioactive. Silicate glasses containing Na_2O and/or CaO show bioactivity although pure silica glass does not show it. In the present study, in order to investigate possibility for obtaining bioactive alumina ceramics, apatite-forming ability of Na_2O-CaO-Al_2O_3 glasses in simulated body fluid were investigated. No apatite was formed on the surfaces of any glasses in this system. This indicates that Al-OH group does not induce apatite nucleation in SBF contrary to Si-OH group.
