Si_3N_4 matrix composites reinforced with SiC particles were fabricated by hot-pressing using Y_2O_3 or Y_2O_3/Al_2O_3 additives and their mechanical properties were evaluated. The size and aspect ratio of β-Si_3N_4 grains were decreased with increasing SiC content, though the grain morphology of Si_3N_4-SiC composite with Y_2O_3 was different from that of Y_2O_3/Al_2O_3 additive. Bending strength of composite with Y_2O_3 was substantially improved by the development of fine microstructure due to the addition of SiC. While the strength of the composite with Y_2O_3 and Al_2O_3 was decreased monotonously with increasing SiC content.
