This study was made of the carcinogenesis and extesion of rat (Sprague-Dawley) colonic cancer induced by DMH as a bacic study and human colonic cancer as a clinical study histopathologically. In macroscopic appearance mucosal (m) and submucosal (sm) cancer were classified into the protruded type (I p, I sp, I s) and the superficial type (II a, II a+II c, II b, II c, II c+II a). In microscopic appearance sm cancer was classified into the vertical growth type and the horizontal growth type. The results were as folloes: 1) Basic study: Early cancers were 108 lesions (m: 66, sm: 42). In macroscopic appearance the protruded type was 78.8%, and the superficial type was 21.2%. In sm cancer the former was 73.8%, the latter was 26.2%. The incidence of sm invasion was increased as the size grow large in each form. In microscopic appearance the vertical growth type was 21.4%, the horizontal growth type was 78.6% in sm cancer. 2) Clinical study: (1) Early cancers with adenoma commponent were 535 lesions (m: 467, sm: 68). In m cancer the protruded type was 86.5%, and the superficial type was 13.5%. In sm cancer the former was 86.8%, the latter was 13.2%. In microscopic appearance the vertical growth type was 91.7%, the horizontal growth type was 8.3% in sm cancer. (2) Early cancers without adenoma commponent were 113 lesions (m: 43, sm: 70). In m cancer the protruded type was 51.2%, and the superficial type was 48.8%. In sm cancer the former was 52.9%, the latter was 47.1%. In microscopic appearance the vertical growth type was 40.4%, the horizontal growth type was 59.6% in sm cancer. The extesion of rat colonic cancer induced by DMH resembled that of human cancer without adenoma commponent, especially superficial type.
