To clarify the effects of microenvironment and EGF on cancer cell growth, invation and metastasis. Gastric cancer cells, which was established into stomach wall of nude mice. Cancer cell implanted into the stomach wall could grow invasively and metastasize to the lymphnode around the stomach and the aorta by 4 to 6 weeks after the implantation and almost all mice died by 12 weeks due to the pylorus stenosis. Histology of the implanted cancer cells showed that in the stomach wall cancer cells grew in vasively into the mucosal layer. The effect of EGF on cancer cell growth was examined by measuring the survival rate of the mice receiving the resection of submaxillary glands. The survival rate of mice receiving the resection of submaxillary glands was significantly higher than that of control. In addition, in the group of mice with the resection of submaxillary glands, growth retardation of cancer cells were observed. These results suggested the important role of microenvironment and EGF on cancer cell growth and metastasis.
