We study new types solitary wave solutions of the higher order nonlinear Schrodinger equation (HONLSE) with variable coefficients, that is, the generalized higher order nonlinear Schrodinger equation (GHONLSE). The GHONLSE describes the propagation of ultrashort light pulses in optical fibers. Using the generalized Lie group reduction method (GLGRM), the abundant solitary wave solutions of GHONLSE are obtained from the known solutions of HONLSE. Some results that are applied to design of optical pulse compressor and solitary wave based communications links also have been studied.
