The effect of the hydrophone active element size measured assuming circular geometry on the sensitivity calibration using a narrow beam is investigated. It is confirmed that there is a hydrophone that has a noncircular effective active element despite its circular geometry, by measuring the effective radii of a hydrophone for the direction turned with a step of 5° on the active element. As a result of calibrating the hydrophone sensitivities using a focused beam and measured element radii, the sensitivity dispersion due to the circular assumption is identified as an important uncertainty source of the measurement.
