Polymeric waveguide polarizers are demonstrated by incorporating a silver nanoparticle overlayer, which is formed on a fluorinated polymer material by the amine-metal interaction in terms of the aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) self-assembled monolayer. By using spectral absorbance measurements, it has been found that the APTES could be attached on the surface with a density of 2.1 groups/nm2 by simple spin-coating of the APTES after the oxygen plasma treatment of the fluorinated polymer. The waveguide polarizer with the nanoparticle overlayer exhibits a polarization extinction ratio of 40 dB, and a negligible excess loss for transverse electric (TE) polarization.
