A low-voltage driving liquid crystal (LC) lens of large aperture is realized using a newly developed water-borne thermosetting paint with weak conductivity. The conductive film turns the spatially abruptly varying electric field into a smoothly varying electric field to produce the lenslike distribution of refractive index in the LC layer. An LC lens of 15 mm aperture is fabricated. The lens can work either as a positive lens or a negative lens at driving voltages as low as only around 20 Vrms.
