Development of Double-Structure Heavy-Element Impurity Pellet for Active Spectroscopy of High-Temperature Plasmas

Two kinds of double-structure impurity pellets for the active spectroscopy of high-temperature plasmas have been newly developed in order to inject heavy-element impurities into the discharge of large helical device (LHD) without radiative collapse. One of the designs is a carbon pellet with a heavy-element coating of 5–15 μm thickness. The other is a carbon or polyethylene tubular pellet into which a thin heavy-element wire of 100–300 μm diameter is inserted. Then, the newly designed Sn-coated carbon pellet and Mo-inserted coaxial impurity pellet were injected into LHD discharge as a first trial. As a result, successful discharge without plasma collapse was demonstrated with the observation of excellent time-developed heavy-element spectra.
