A miniaturized edge mode vibrator using a piezoelectric ceramic bar with stepped end is proposed and the characteristics of the vibrator are determined by finite element method and experiments. In addition, the application of the vibrator in a tactile sensor is experimentally investigated. The result shows that a new sensor for detecting hardness with a high contact sensitivity and easy mechanical support can be obtained using the edge mode vibrator.
