A real-time measurement method for the variation of the acoustic properties of coating materials painted on a metal plate surface was studied experimentally. An experimental system, which detects in-phase difference and quadrature-phase difference, was devised. Surface waves or plate waves were transmitted and received on the aluminum plate with water-based paint using a pair of angle probes, and the amplitude and phase difference of the received wave signal were measured by real-time monitoring. The attenuation and phase shift of the received wave signals were calculated by comparing the acoustic properties with and without the paint. The state change of the paint was successfully monitored in real time from the attenuation and phase shift of the plate wave.
