An ultraviolet high-spectral-resolution lidar has been developed for measuring the optical parameters of aerosol and cloud such as extinction coefficient, volume backscatter coefficient, lidar ratio and laser beam transmittance. In this system, the Mie backscatter signal is transmitted by the Fabry–Perot filter in contrast to the atomic or molecular absorption filter in a conventional high-spectral-resolution lidar. Using an ultraviolet laser wavelength of 355 nm, a high-accuracy measurement of aerosol optical parameters has been realized for an atmosphere with a low aerosol concentration. This method does not require an assumption about the relationship between the extinction and backscatter coefficients of aerosol and cloud.
