The effect of the domain configuration on the microscopic and macroscopic crystal structures of BaTiO3 is reported using polarizing microscopy observations and high-spatial-resolution synchrotron X-ray measurements. The size of the ferroelectric domain was controlled by defects produced by substituting strontium for barium. The domain configuration of Sr-substituted BaTiO3 consisted of small and uniform domains. The tetragonality of the Sr-substituted BaTiO3 was smaller than that of undoped tetragonal BaTiO3 due to the lattice strain from the domain boundaries. We investigated the domain-controlled BaTiO3 crystal and discussed the relationship between the domain configuration and microscopic crystal structure.
