Comparative studies on the simulation of and experiment on laser ablation of Ni targets in 10 Torr N2 gas and water environments are carried out to examine the influence of such environments on the use of a Ti:sapphire laser (wavelength 800 nm, pulsewidth 130 fs). In the experimental results, the ablation depth of the targets in water is larger than that in 10 Torr N2 gas at a fluence lower than 20 J/cm2, while the case is opposite at a higher fluence. The ablation processes in the two different environments are analyzed by the constrained interpolation profile (CIP) method and the experimentally observed difference in ablation depth between 10 Torr N2 gas and water is elucidated.
