The kinetics of the growth of the rotator phase during the solid-solid phase transition from the low-temperature ordered phasein a single crystal of n-alkane (n-pentacosane, C25H52) was investigated by means of in situ opticalmicroscopy. The change in morphology and the growth rate were simultaneously observed. The growth front was clear and straight at an early stage but became slightly curved with time under isothermal conditions. The growth rate of the rotator phase (V) was given byV∝exp (-const/ΔT) where ΔT isthe degree of superheating. Therefore it was concluded, based on the above morphology and the growth rate, thatthe growth of the rotator phase is mainlycontrolled by two-dimensional nucleation whichis a type of multinucleation.
