The high-field dielectric dissipation factor ($\tan\delta$) of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films was studied as a function of the applied ac field and the voltage application period. The measurements were made at room temperature by means of a current comparator-type capacitance bridge. As the applied ac field increased, the high-field $\tan\delta$ increased gradually. With the voltage application period, the high-field $\tan\delta$ first increased and then decreased, exhibiting a peak. This time variation of $\tan\delta$ was accelerated with increase in the applied electric field. These characteristics of the high-field $\tan\delta$ in LDPE films are discussed on the bases of the carrier generation in the bulk due to the modified Poole-Frenkel effect, the carrier injection from the electrodes, the trapping of the carriers and the formation of the space charge layer in front of the electrodes.
