最大128人の高校生を重し役に橋のたわみ具合を測定する——。山口県岩国市は2004年8月24日，同年3月に架け替えが終了した錦帯橋で，このような強度試験を実施した。 岩国市は1953年から5年ごとに強度試験を実施している。2000年12月から2004年3月まで3年以上に及んだ架け替え工事も，93年の調査結果を基に実施することを決めた。
