2001年7月の土曜日，埼玉県秩父市にある荒川の河川敷に500人以上の親子連れが集まった。「川に入ったのは初めて」と，子供たちは一日中，ますのつかみ取りや川遊びをして楽しんだ。 このイベントを主催したのは荒川学舎秩父（以下，荒川学舎）。98年2月に埼玉県建設業協会秩父支部青年経営者部会と，自然保護団体である秩父の環境を考える会，秩父愛鳥会が共同で設立した。
