唐の高僧・鑑真が759年に創建した唐招提寺（奈良市）は、律宗の総本山として知られる。約1200年の歴史を持つ国宝の金堂では、解体を伴う大規模な改修を実施した。伝統建築に生じた変形のメカニズムを解析し、構造補強を施して次代へ引き継ぐ10年がかりのプロジェクトに挑んだのは、竹中工務店の構造技術者だ。
