戦後の復興期から「明るさ」一辺倒でひた走ってきたのが，日本の「照明文化」だ。勤勉な国民性もあって，夜になっても均一に照らし出す作業空間が指向されていたのだ。近年，「必要なところに必要なだけの照明」という観点も見直されている。省エネルギーのためにも今後は，「暗さ」を受け入れる発想の転換が必要だ。
