[Background]The method of estimating mouth level exposure (MLE) to some smoke constituents, such as nicotine, from a certain constituent retained on human-smoked cigarette filter butts has been reported as one of the evaluation methods of human-smoked constituent yields from a cigarette. This method uses correlations between machine-smoking yields of smoke constituents and a certain smoke constituent on cigarette filter butts.[Objectives]1) To evaluate the expanded applicability of this method to the smoke constituents to which attention has been paid in countries such as Canada.2) To investigate the relationships between estimated MLE to each constituent and index values such as "tar" labeled on the package using commercial cigarette brands in Japan.[Methods]1) Five cigarette brands were machine-smoked under eight or nine smoking regimes, and the yields of the smoke constituents and filter nicotine were measured. Correlations between them were then analyzed.2) From about 50 smokers aged from 25 to 64, cigarette filter butts of each brand were collected, numbering about 750 in total for 15 brands (1 - 20 mg/cigarette "tar" labeled on the package). The filter nicotine was then measured and the MLE to each smoke constituent was estimated.[Results]1) The yields of smoke constituents were well correlated with filter nicotine, except for some constituents with lower yields. MLE can therefore be estimated using the filter nicotine.2)For many smoke constituents, estimated MLE tended to be greater as "tar" labeled on the package were greater.
