Novel branched waxes, which are composed of polyethylene chain and dimethylsiloxane dimmer (branch unit) was developed, and their effect on the hardness of oil wax gel was examined.<BR>Among the branched waxes, a center-branched type, named ESE, improved the gel hardness dramatically when blended with n-paraffin. This may be because that ESE can make the wax crystal in the gel smaller without decreasing the wax crystallinity. By using ESE, the total amount of wax in a lipstick was decreased by 30% without spoiling the stick toughness, which resulted in lipsticks with glossy application and smooth texture.
