To construct novel high functional compound materials, novel hybrid copolymers having alternating covalentbonded organic moieties-magnesium frameworks were prepared by the reaction of magnesium ethoxide with such diols as hydroquinone, 4, 4'-dihydroxybiphenyl, bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) sulfide, and bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) sulfone and their properties were examined.<BR>The color of the hybrid copolymer having the phenylene (-C6H4-) moiety was found to change from colorless to green in an atmosphere of oxygen, and the copolymer was suggested to have the ability of oxygen adsorption and activation.<BR>Thus, the UV-VIS and ESR spectra of the copolymer having the phenylene moiety were taken in an atmosphere of oxygen. The UV-VIS spectra showed an absorption maximum at 600 nm whose intensity increased with the passage of time. The ESR spectra showed a peak at 337.0mT due to an organic free electron which may be caused through an electron transfer from the phenylene moiety to the magnesium atom by an adsorption of molecular oxygen. Spin-trapping method was used to evaluate the activated oxygen species. As a result, the specific signals due to both the hydroxy and hydroperoxy radicals were observed. These results suggested that the hybrid copolymer with the phenylene moiety has the ability of the oxygen adsorption and activation. The reaction of acetaldehyde with the hybrid copolymer in an air atmosphere showed the decrease of the acetaldehyde concentration with time, indicating that the hybrid copolymer has the oxidation catalysis ability.
