Ink-absorbing layer was formed using a barcoater and its ink bleed was investigated by thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Thus, small particles of silica adsorbed with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), a cationic surfactant, were spread with a barcoater on a substrate to be used as an ink-absorbing layer. The layer prepared was about 2-8μm thick independent of the adsorbed amount of CTAB. We estimated the extent of ink bleed with TLC and found that ink bleed could be reduced by an increasing ζ-potential due to CTAB adsorption. This would be caused by the electrostatic interaction between CTAB and dye molecules.
