Emulsification characteristics of diglycerol tetraoleate (DGTO), which has attracted attention as a cosmetic cleans-ing oil, were compared with those of two versatile oils, Liquid paraffin and glycerol tri-2-ethylhexanoate (GTE). DGTO was found to yield O/Wm and Wm phases more easily than the versatile oils even in systems containing more oil than water. The effect of added surfactant was the least for DGTO among the three oils since DGTO showed the lowest interfacial tension between water and oil. From small angle X-ray scattering measurements, DGTO molecules were found to be solubilized hardly between liquid crystals but presented as fine liquid droplets. These properties of DGTO molecules were suggested to arise from their high organicity and inorganicity.
