Black pigments with finer size, higher blackness, greater tinting strength, and better weathering resistance are required for the production of better coloring materials. In this paper, we prepared black iron oxide particles by coating carbon black with the assist of methyltriethoxysilane as an adhesive agent on magnetite and Mn modified hematite. The blackness, tinting strength, and weathering resistance of the iron oxide particles were largely improved by the carbon coating. TEM photographs indicated that the carbon black is firmly bound to the surface of the black iron oxide particles as a distinct layer.
