Mica was modified with a tetradecyl group, and the products were characterized in various respects. 1, 3, 5, 7-Tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane (TMCTS) was deposited on mica at 80°C by chemical vapor deposition and was polymerized catalytically to form a poly (methylsiloxane) layer on the surface. Mica coated with TMCTS was prepared in four varieties with different mean particle sizes. The coated amount of TMCTS and the amount of Si-H groups decreased with increasing mean particle size. Mica modified with a tetradecyl group was synthesized from silicone coated mica by hydrosilylation with 1-tetradecene. The added amount of tetradecyl groups decreased with increasing mean particle size. The water contact angles and the yield value and the viscosity of disperse systems of mica modified with the tetradecyl group were dependent on the added amount of tetradecyl groups.
