We prepared silica microcapsules containing various UV-shielding materials by an interfacial reaction method and investigeted their shielding ability. The silica microcapsules were made by the reaction of sodium silicate emulsified in hexane with ammonium hydrocarbonate. UV-shielding materials, 50-and 200-nm CeO2, TiO2 and ZnO, were previously dispersed in the aqueous solution of sodium silicate. The UV-shielding materials were included 1-50% in the silica microcapsules, of which size was 1, 5, and 10, μm. It was proved that microcapsule containing 50-nm TiO2 was suited for the shielding of UV range and that containing 200-nm TiO2 for visible range. In general, the greater the content of the shielding material in microcapsule was, the greater the UV-shielding ability was. The optimum content of the shielding materials in the microcapsule for shielding ability was dependent on the particle size of the shielding materials. ThE shielding ability of 1-μm silica microcapsule was the greatest, which was close to that of TiO2 only.
