Brilliant carmine 6B is a magenta pigment commonly used for process color inks, in the printing ink industry. The particles of carmine 6B have a flaky shape and form a dense network structure. The flocculate structure of carmine 6B is responsible for remarkable strain sensitive viscoelastic properties of the ink. In this study, suspensions of carmine 6B in polybutadienes having different viscosities were used, and stress relaxation phenomena of the suspensions were examined using a coneplate relaxometer. The stress relaxation of the carmine 6B suspensions under various flow histories was measured at several different magnitudes of strain. The break down and formation of the flocculated structure of carmine 6B were discussed and the relaxation mechanisms of carmine 6B suspensions were investigated.
