In order to increase the UV-shielding effect and to depress the photocatalytic properties of titania particles, we examined the surface coating of ceria and investigated the effects of the pretreatment of TEOS adsorption on titania.<BR>The amount of Ce (IV) ion adsorbed on the titania surface increased when the titania was pretreated by TEOS. UV-shielding property was improved by the ceria coating regardless of TEOS pretreatment. Photocatalytic activity was depressed by the ceria coating, and the depression was emphasized by the TEOS pretreatment.
