Fine silica powders were modified with quaternary ammonium groups, and the products were characterized in various respects. 1, 3, 5, 7-Tetramethylcyclotetra siloxane was deposited on fine silica powder at 80°C by a chemical vapor deposition method, where it was catalytically polymerized to form a surface coating of poly (methylsiloxane). Fine silica powder modified with quaternary ammonium groups (XT m, m : carbon number of alkyl chain, 4-12) was synthesized from polymethylsiloxane-SiO2 by hydrosilylation with ρ-chloromethylstyrene and subsequent treatment with trialkylamine. The contact angle of XTm showed a tendency to increase with increasing carbon number of the alkyl chain. Furthermore, in the case of the powder-oil dispersion system, the Bingham yield value increased with increasing the carbon number of the alkyl chain in the dispersed particles and the coagulation force between particles.
