The effects of fatty acid and alcohol portions in sodium 2-sulfonatofatty acid higher alkyl esters (α-SF) on the preparation and properties of quaternary microemulsion systems were investigated in terms of solubilization parameter, optimum salinity, and so on.<BR>The α-SF always needed the addition of a hydrophilic alcohol to form a middle-phase microemulsion because of its strong hydrophobicity. The solubilization parameter and optimum salinity for the formation of the middlephase microemulsion were dependent upon the total hydrophobic chain length and difference between two hydrophobic chain lengths in the α-SF molecules. As the total hydrophobic chain length increased, the solubilization parameter increased but the optimum salinity decreased. At the same total hydrophobic chain length, the α-SF possessing a small difference between two hydrophobic chains enhanced the solubilization parameter considerably.
