A novel cellulose derivative, cellulose nitrate carboxymethyl ether (CNC) is a polyelectrolyte with certain amount of carboxymethyl ether groups and nitrate ester groups. CNC was found to have not only excellent solubility in mixtures of water and a small amount organic solvents but also excellent compatibility with several water-soluble resins. CNC, which possesses hydrophilic carboxymethyl ether and hydrophobic nitrate ester, behaved as a polymeric surfactant with an excellent pigment dispersibility. The modulus of CNC backbone was as high as that of original cellulose at a wide range of temperature. Also its glass transition temperature was high, resulting in an excellent drying and heat-blocking resistance.
