The adsorbability of dye molecules on a cationic Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film was investigated, in comparison with that on a cationic monolayer spread on water surface. It was found that α-naphtholorange (NO) and methyl orange (MO) molecules were adsorbed selectively onto the LB film of tri-stearylmethylammonium chloride (TSAC), similarly to their adsorption behavior at the spread monolayer, and also that the adsorbability of MO was remarkably affected by the solution pH.<BR>In order to elucidate the molecular orientations of adsorbed states, we analyzed the chromophore of MO and the alkyl chain of TSAC by polarized UV-vis and FTIR spectroscopies, respectively. It turned out that the long axis of MO molecules was parallel to the alkyl chains of TSAC, which oriented almost perpendicular to the substrate surface.
