Metal-free phthalocyanines (H2-PCs) were subjected to a hydrogen treatment in the same manner as hydrogenation or hydrocracking. A mechanism of hydrogen holding on phthalocyanine type compounds was examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and proton magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. From C 1 s and N1 s XPS spectra of H2-PCs, the tetrabenzoporphyrazine underwent a chemical change during the hydrogen treatment. Hydrogens were held at the β sites of phenylene rings in H2-PC, which was confirmed by NMR spectra. By the hydrogen treatment, H2-PC was transformed into a or α-like crystal form and then fused through an amorphous state.
