For the purpose of improving the dispersion stability, SiO2-coated TiO2 particles grafted with poly (dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) was treated with hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS). The endcapping effect with HMDS on the dispersion stability was observed in all the systems tested. The stability increases with an increase in molecular weight of grafted PDMS. The HMDS treatment also enables the particles to be dispersed in PDMS more easily. These results are reasonably explained in terms of the decrease in the interaction energy of the surface of SiO2 and PDMS by the HMDS treatment. The energy was estimated to decrease by a factor of ca. 0.13 with the treatment from the calculation, based on the frequency shift of the freely vibrating silanol group accompanied by its hydrogen bond formation with PDMS.
