Reaction products were obtained by the reaction with one of the copper phthalocyanine nitrogen isologues i. e., copper dibenzodipyridinoporphyrazine and its fractions (Cu-2P) and one of the quaternizing agents i. e., diethylsulfate, according to the U. S. patent. These products have lower solubility in water than other products used the other quaternizing agents. In consequence of measurement of infrared spectra and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, the reaction products were not quaternary Cu-2 P but sulfonated ones which were considered that the synthesis is difficult in this field.<BR>Examining reaction mechanisum, it was considered that the sulfonation of Cu-2P was not aroma-tic electrophilic substitution because reaction products were obtained under gentle condition about 100°C.<BR>Therefore, the authors concluded that the sulfonation was aromatic nucleophilic substitution, be-cause the reaction took place in spite of the presence of the formic acid solvent.
