Dye elution in NaCl aqueous solution was examined on Sunset Yellow FCF aluminum lakes from two sorts of origins : laboratory products prepared from an aluminum hydroxide substrate with various levels of dye contents, and manufacturers' products on the market. The concentration of eluted dye anion [<I>D</I>]<I>s</I> was measured as a function of the lake/solution ratio <I>Wp</I> and time, which gave three different types of elution curves with the following features : (1) [<I>D</I>]<I>s</I> decreased with elapse of time while it decreased with increasing <I>Wp</I>, except for the initial stage, (2) [<I>D</I>]<I>s</I> initially increased and then turned to decrease giving a maximum, while it increased with increasing <I>Wp</I>, and (3) [<I>D</I>]<I>s</I> increased consistently in the whole span of measurement with the same dependence on <I>Wp</I> as in the second case. <BR>The phenomenon in the first case was interpreted as the equilibrium-attaining process in the anion exchange, where the diffusion of counter ions within the lake particle was ratedetermining. In both of the second and third cases, plotting of 1/ [<I>D</I>]<I>s</I> vs. 1/<I>Wp</I> gave straight lines, which suggested that the ion exchange equilibrium was attained. <BR>These results were discussed in reference to those obtained previously with Tartrazine lakes, and the same dye elution mechanism as proposed for them was also found valid for Sunset Yellow FCF lakes.
