Dispersion of carbon black in water was remarkably improved by the low temperature oxygen plasma treatment, but the degradation products like humic substance were formed on the carbon black surface by this treatment. In order to depress the amounts of degradation products without lowering the dispersibility in water, the plasma oxidization treatment of carbon black was carried out by using a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen or hydrogen as a plasma gas.<BR>The amounts of the degradation products were decreased with the increase of the amount of the added gas. The effect of added hydrogen was greater than that of nitrogen. The dispersibility in water became lower with decrease of amounts of degradation products, but the sample treated with the mixed gas containing 0.4 volume fraction of hydrogen had minimum amounts of degradation products and showed good dispersibility in water. It was found that the plasma treatment using hydrogen gas without oxygen has the effect of cleaning the sample surface.
