Observation of Paint Film Formation Process Using a Lamb Wave Device

A method of observing the paint film drying process is proposed by using a Lamb wave device. The device has two surfaces : one for energy transduction and the other for painting. The propagation characteristics in the Lamb wave device composed of two layers, a piezoelectric substrate and a paint film, are related to the drying state of the paint film.<BR>The Lamb wave velocity propagating on the layered structure takes a peak value during the drying process. The peak time depends on the film thickness, and arises when the paint fluidity disappears. The time response of the insertion loss of the device has the same tendency as that of the velocity except for the small shift of the peak time. The above described observation results suggest that the present technique is valid for evaluating the drying state of the paint film.
